Dewi Sartika is a pioneering
figure of Indonesian female independence. She was one of the national heroes who came from a Sundanese noble. Dewi
was born in London, December 4, 1884. After her father died she was raised by her
uncle, a governor in Cicalengka.

Dewi Sartika got an education about the Sundanese
cultural from her uncle and west culture from a lady of Dutch Resident
Assistant. She married in 1906 with Raden Kanduruan Agah Suriawinata, a teacher
at the Teacher Training.
Since her childhood, Dewi
has demonstrated her interest in education. While playing she was happy to play
behaviors as a teacher. At the age of 10 years she was appallingly Cicalengka
with the ability to read and she wrote a few words in Dutch, which she taught
to children in Kepatihan maid.
An Initiator of Indonesian Women School
In 1904 Dewi had founded
a school called 'School of wife'. Her struggle helped the school set up by her
grandfather, RAA Martanegara and Den Hamer who served as the Teaching Office of
the Inspector at the time. After six years, the school's name changed to
"School of Virtue Wife '. September 1929 the school's name changed again
to 'School Raden Dewi. Dewi Sartika concerned in women
education.
Dewi Sartika provides many lessons about
household formation to their students. For her services she was awarded a
service medal by the Dutch East Indies government. Dewi Sartika died on 11
September 1947 in Tasikmalaya. Her name is famous until today especially for
Indonesian Women. Dewi Sartika is the next heroine after Kartini who concerned in women education.
