Cut Nyak Din is a national hero from the porch of
Mecca, Aceh, Indonesia. She is the heroin for independence before the national
revival. Cut Nyak Din was born in Lampadang, Aceh in 1850. She was married to
Ibrahim Teuku Cik Lamnga at the age of 12 years. She was blessed with a son.
After her husband died in battle, Cut Nyak Din married again with Teuku Umar in
1880. From their second marriage she was blessed with a son named Cut Gambang.
During the Aceh war in
1874-1880 Cut Nyak Din and her first baby fled
with women and many groups. While her husband, Ibrahim Lamnga fought against the
Dutch until he died at Le Tarum. Then she struggled with her second husband,
Teuku Umar since 1893. After Teuku Umar died in battle in Meulaboh, she led her
small force in rural areas of Meulaboh. She kept to fought against the Dutch colonizer
to get Aceh’s freedom.
Uphill battle made Cut Nyak Din suffered from gout and myopic. Feeling
pity, one of her troops, Pang Laot reported them to the Netherlands. They were attacked;
Cut Nyak Din was arrested and taken to Banda Aceh. There she was treated until
cured. But as concerns of the Netherlands, she eventually exiled to the Sumedang,
West Java on December 11, 1905. Cut Nyak Din died there on November 6, 1908.
She is heroin of independence for Aceh and for
Indonesia.
